Soft Shell Clams

Soft shell clams are very popular in New England as an appetizer with a lobster dinner, for a clam bake or as a main course. Soft shell clams are known as steamer clams. They are generally around two to three inches in size, although they can get larger, and there are about 12 to 15 clams in a pound.

At Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, we sell other types of fresh and frozen seafood, too, so check our mail order page to see our selection of lobster, crab meat, scallops and mussels. If you're planning a party or event, we have special package orders for large groups. You can also get the salt and utensils from us.

How to Cook Your Soft Shell Clams

There are several ways to cook a soft shell clam. They can be steamed for five to 10 minutes. Adding something to the water, like wine or garlic, will give you a nice clam broth or stock for use in chowders or other recipes. Add your cooked clams to your soup or chowder, or shuck the live soft shell clams, and batter and deep fry them.

However you choose to prepare them, if you're serving them as an appetizer, plan on buying one pound per person. You'll need more if they are going to be the main course. Orders of clams alone must be at least five pounds. If you plan to buy more than 10 pounds, call for a quote. Our phone number is 207-667-2977. We can also be reached at our mailing address, 1237 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, Maine 04605. We ship to all parts of the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii.
